ABOUT US

What is a makerspace?

A Makerspace is part of a growing movement to return to making things. More creating. Less consuming. It’s a place to take classes as well as to access shared space, tools and equipment. There are as many types of makerspaces as there are makers.

What makes us different?

At The Old School Makerspace, our primary focus is on building community around more hands-on arts and crafts such as

woodworking, painting, drawing, and ceramics.

It’s a creative coworking space where people share equipment, tools, workspace, and knowledge with one another.

The Old School Makerspace is much more than a building. Principally, it is a community of people with common interests who help one another to discover creative potential, bring ideas to life, and use skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on the city of San Antonio and beyond. Membership, Meetups, Classes, and Open Shop

This year programming is in full swing at the Old School Makerspace. You can engage with our community in the following ways:

Membership: We’re pleased to offer a new way for folks to have access to all open shops and priority registration for classes. For $30/month you can contribute to our work and reap the benefits of membership. Click here to learn more.

Meetups: Meeting fellow makers with similar interests inspires creativity and results in friendships. Meetups happen monthly, involve working together on a project or projects, and are open to a wide variety of skill levels. There is no cost to join a meetup, but participants supply their own materials.

Classes: YouTube can only get you so far as a maker. Some skills are better learned in person with the coaching and feedback of an instructor and fellow participants. We offer classes on a wide range of topics in addition to our anchor disciplines of ceramics, woodworking, and painting and drawing. All classes have a fee which includes the cost of materials, instruction, and use of the studios/shop.

Open Shop: There are many barriers and some drawbacks to having a home shop or studio. Some makers do not have the space, while others lack a specific tool. The Old School Makerspace offers open shop time to help people work on their own projects at their own pace in a supportive environment. Three-hour open shop sessions are available for a $10 fee to help maintain the space and equipment.
